The Vocal & Music Academy

Track One is a three-hour songwriting workshop for Transition Year groups and youth organisations, 12+. Students work in small groups of five or six, writing original lyrics over a shared chord progression and performing them before the session ends. No musical experience is needed and it is not a talent search — the point is process: how to start something, get unstuck, and finish it. The chord progression turns out to be from a famous song, revealed towards the end of the workshop after everyone has written their song. We bring everything the day needs and there is no preparation for staff. The school provides one room per class group for the three hours, with classes kept intact. If the school has instruments, great though not necessary. Facilitators are working songwriters, gigging performers, recording artists and music teachers — people who do this for a living. Track One comes from the Vocal & Music Academy, a progressive music school based in Leixlip, Co. Kildare since 2013, where students of all ages learn singing, piano and guitar. We also run The Performer's Mindset, a two-hour workshop for Junior and Leaving Cert students preparing for the music practical exam, covering technical preparation, intention and stage presence. Workshops travel to schools, youth organisations, ETB centres and community programmes around Dublin, Kildare and the surrounding counties.
