Emo Court House and Parklands

Emo Court House, designed by the architect James Gandon in 1790 for the Earls of Portarlington, is a magnificent example of Neo-Classical architecture. The house, surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland, was first laid out in the 18th century. We welcome schools, during our open season, to experience our free exterior tours where pupils can learn about the story of the house and the people who built it and lived there. We walk around the entire outside of the house, highlighting its interesting features while incorporating part of the landscaped tranquil garden. If time permits, we take a walk to the Walled Garden, which is approx. 400 metres from the main house. Emo Court and Parklands is the perfect place to experience an important part of our social and cultural history. New this year - options to: Go classical statue hunting by using our Statue Spotter Trail (primary school level). Examine the external features of the house with our Spot the Differences sheet (primary school level). Discover the Neo-Classical architectural features of the house (secondary school level). Please note: The main house remains closed for 2024, due to ongoing refurbishment and our guiding service closes for the season on Friday 1st November 2024. Thank you and we hope to see you soon.
